1. What is Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders (HKUYL)?

Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders (HKUYL) is a non-government, non-profit organisation solely run by secondary school students in Hong Kong, registered under the Societies Ordinance (REF.CP/LIC/SO/19/10188).

2. What is the mission of HKUYL?

We aim “To Inspire Tomorrow’s Leaders Today” through different activities and workshops, and to foster leadership talents in Hong Kong youths.  The Union also aims to raise awareness of local issues, and strives to promote a sense of global citizenship as well as commitment and dedication to the world community.

3. When and by whom was HKUYL founded?

HKUYL was founded in October 1992 by four secondary school students after participating in the Hugh O'Brian Youth World Leader Congress (HOBY WLC) in Chicago, USA.  They had the vision of recreating their experiences in Chicago, gathering other student leaders in Hong Kong and allowing them to develop into future leaders of society.

There are a total of 33 member schools.

5. What is the relationship between Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders (HKUYL) and the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY)?

HKUYL has been working closely with HOBY since our establishment and has since sent 10 outstanding Campers each year to Chicago, USA to participate in the annual Hugh O’Brian Youth World Leadership Congress (HOBY WLC). Selected Campers represent Hong Kong SAR as Hong Kong Ambassadors in the WLC.

6. What are the application procedures to become a member school of HKUYL?

6.1 Application:       

Any registered Secondary School in Hong Kong is eligible for membership.  The applicant should submit an application letter along with an endorsement letter from the School Principal to the Union. Please note that the Application should be on a school basis.

Method of submission:

Applicants may submit the Application via email or by post.

6.2 Approval of application:

The final decision regarding school membership shall rest with the Committee in office that year.

7. What are the application procedures to become a Camper of HKUYL?

7.1  Eligibility: Secondary 4 students studying in HKUYL Member Schools.

 

7.2 Each member school has the privilege to nominate at most two Student Ambassadors (hereinafter referred to as “Campers”) each year to represent their school in HKUYL.

7.3 Member schools are advised to select Campers via interviews conducted mainly by HKUYL alumni from their school.

8. What is the application procedure to become an Executive Committee / Sub-Committee Member of HKUYL?

8.1  Eligibility: Secondary 5 students studying in HKUYL Member schools.

8.2  Each member school has the privilege to nominate Ex-Campers and at most two Non-Campers to apply for a position in the Executive Committee and the Sub-Committee each year.

9. How is the Board of Committees structured?

The HKUYL Board of Committees includes the Executive Committee and the Sub-Committee.

 

The Executive Committee comprises one Chairperson, two Vice-chairpersons, two Internal Secretaries, one External Secretary, one Treasurer, two Programming Directors, two Publicity Officers, and two Promotion Managers.

The Sub-Committee is divided into the Program Department, Publicity Department and Promotion Department, led by the Programming Directors, Publicity Officers and Promotion Managers respectively. The number of Sub-Committee members is decided by the Executive Committee of that year.
